When Tate’s Cairn Weather Radar ceased operation due to power disruptions caused by Hato, they took prompt actions to ensure uninterrupted supply of radar image data and products. These officers were commended for their dedicated effort in maintaining the operations of both Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar and Tate’s Cairn Weather Radar during the passage of Severe Typhoon Hato. They have ensured the availability of real-time tidal information. The team had efficiently resumed the operation of the two tide gauges before Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar approached Hong Kong on 27 August. These officers were commended for their whole-hearted effort in conducting urgent repair of equipment in tide gauges in Tai Miu Wan and Shek Pik, which were damaged by Severe Typhoon Hato on 23 August. This honor has enhanced the image of the Observatory as well as the profile of Hong Kong, China as a founding Member of the Typhoon Committee. This officer was commended for her production of the winning design for the ESCAP/ WMO Typhoon Committee 50th Anniversary Logo, which has already been adopted for use by the Typhoon Committee Secretariat in the official communication and publicity materials leading up to the celebration events. These officers were commended for their contribution in the completed renovation of the Cheung Chau Meteorological Station (CCMS), despite its remote locality and inaccessibility, and successful organization of ‘the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of numbered tropical cyclone signals in Hong Kong’ publicity event on 7 June 2017. These events have enhanced the public’s understanding and image of the Observatory. These officers were commended for their success in coordinating a series of events in celebrating the 20th anniversary of Friends of the Observatory, many of which took place outside office hours. These officers were commended for their efforts in locating the Observatory’s remnant site at Au Tau outside office hours and perfecting the Observatory’s historical records in geomagnetic observation. #Sso teamspirit professionalThey promoted the Observatory’s professional image in the meteorological community and at the international level, and further advanced the engagement of the public in capturing and appreciating clouds. These officers were commended for the dedication in developing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)’s International Cloud Atlas (ICA) webpage for the meteorological community, the public and media worldwide. #Sso teamspirit isoTheir efforts have contributed to the success of the Observatory in acquiring the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems (QMS) certification in February. These officers were commended for the dedication in enhancing the Observatory’s weather forecasting and warning services to the international standard.
